Ottawa Public Library - Politics, Paddles and Pollution!

Monday, June 8, 2009
6:30 p.m.

Ottawa Library

Rivers have long been a source of inspiration to artists; they are frequently a topic of political debate. Rivers reveal how we are treating our environment, and they are also a place where we commune with Nature. The Ottawa Public Library would like to invite you to an evening of dance and discussion at the Main Branch - 120 Metcalfe St., Auditorium. This event is a leadup to the 6th Canadian River Heritage Conference and will feature a presentation from the Scottish Country Dancers and a discussion about the state of Canadian rivers (courtesy of the Ottawa Riverkeeper and well-known writer and canoeist Max Finkelstein). The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 8. Come and find out how politics, paddles, and pollution are all connected!

Sunday, June 14, 2009
1:30 p.m.
National Capital Commission Information Plaza(corner of Wellington and Metcalfe, across from Parliament Hill)

In honour of the 6th Canadian River Heritage Conference, the Display Team of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is proud to perform the world premiere of a composition by Mr. Chas Inglis. The kilted and gowned dancers will celebrate the Scots contribution to Canadian river heritage, remembering MacKenzie, Fraser, Liard, Thompson and so many others.

Scottish Country Dancing has its roots in the French court dances of the 16th Century. Today, it can be considered as the ballroom dancing of Scotland and consists of Reels, Jigs, Hornpipes, Minuets and the uniquely Scottish Strathspeys. Scottish Country Dancing is a very social form of dancing because you dance with seven other people instead of just one partner.

Two performances will be offered free of charge. Don’t miss this incredible show!
